General summary
The volume assembles, from a 1997 symposium, a cross-disciplinary case that adolescent sleep is a serious and neglected variable in the study of youth. Its recurring empirical spine is a small cluster of findings established largely by Carskadon's group: across adolescence, teens sleep less on school nights, their sleep timing delays (later bedtimes, evening preference), and the gap between school-night and weekend schedules widens — while the physiological need for sleep does not fall. The book's central reframing is that this phase delay is not purely psychosocial (release from parental bedtimes, jobs, socializing) but is at least permitted, and perhaps driven, by peripubertal changes in the biological mechanisms timing sleep.
To build that biological scaffold, the early chapters move from human neuroendocrinology (puberty, sex steroids, Tanner staging) to two animal models — a diurnal rodent (Octodon degus) and rhesus monkeys — where an adolescent shift toward later activity offset appears and, in monkeys, can be blocked by zinc deprivation that retards maturation. An anthropological chapter widens the frame further, arguing that the Western pattern of solitary, consolidated, walled sleep is unrepresentative of the human range.
