Affect Regulation and the Origin of the Self The Neurobiology of Emotional Development - Schore (s.d.) (EN)Schore builds an over-arching "psychoneurobiological" model of early emotional development by fusing developmental neuroscience, neurochemistry, developmental psychology, attachment theory and psychoanalysis. The organizing construct is regulation: the infant's capacity to regulate affect and internal state, initially supplied by the mother, is progressively internalized. Schore then applies the model clinically: insecure attachment as a history of failed dyadic regulation, affect dysregulation as the core of psychopathology, borderline and narcissistic disorders, psychosomatic vulnerability, and a right-brain-to-right-brain account of the psychotherapeutic relationship (Part V). The closing chapters extend the model to right-hemispheric language, the "dialogical self," consciousness, mitochondrial bioenergetics, and a call to reunite psychoanalysis with the natural sciences (Part VI).

He introduces the mother as a "hidden regulator" of the infant's physiology and the orbitofrontal cortex as the affect-regulating structure whose critical period begins at the end of the first year.
The engine of early development is visual, face-to-face experience. Sustained mutual gaze at roughly eye-focus distance lets the mother's facial expression amplify the infant's positive affect in a reciprocal, "symbiotic" loop; pupillary signals (Hess) act as unconscious releasers. Schore argues these gaze transactions are an imprinting medium for the fast-maturing right hemisphere, which is dominant for visuospatial and facial-affective processing. The "practicing period" (roughly 10–18 months) is a stage of elated, sympathetically driven hyperarousal, boundless energy and play — an ontogenetic adaptation. Neuroendocrine cascades (dopamine as a trophic stimulus, opioids, CRF) drive orbitofrontal morphogenesis, and the period culminates in the first internal working models: orbitofrontal-based, nonverbal, right-hemispheric representations of the caregiver's face that begin to regulate subcortically generated affect.
In the second year the socioaffective niche shifts from mirroring and play to socialization and prohibition. Shame emerges as the pivotal affect: a sudden, visually triggered misattunement deflates the toddler's grandiose hyperarousal, producing a parasympathetic, arousal-braking state. Schore proposes that shame stress deactivates the ventral-tegmental (sympathetic/dopaminergic) and activates the lateral-tegmental (parasympathetic/noradrenergic) limbic circuit, driving the late wave of orbitofrontal maturation and, with it, regulation of the HPA axis. Crucially, shame is developmentally adaptive only when followed by interactive repair: the attuned mother re-regulates the child back to positive affect, and the distress-then-repair sequence is internalized as an affect-regulating interactive representation. Chronic, unrepaired shame is cast as the seed of later pathology. The part also treats experience-dependent parcellation (the caregiver acting as an "agent of natural selection" on orbitofrontal-limbic connections), infantile sexuality/gender, and the onset of mature dual-circuit orbitofrontal function around 18 months.
Schore assembles a general psychoneurobiological theory of affect built on five assumptions: emotional representations are distributed across cortical and subcortical limbic regions; subcortical/brainstem structures supply the affect components while cortex supplies regulation; the limbic system is dual (two circuits); the right-expanded orbitofrontal cortex hierarchically dominates both; and socioemotional information is processed in discrete temporal stages (posterior-cortical appraisal, orbitofrontal amplification, subcortical central-state induction, bottom-up feedback). He applies the model to cross-modal/abstract representation, increasingly complex interactive representations, orbitofrontal control of the autonomic nervous system (reciprocal and non-reciprocal modes, conservation-withdrawal), the modulation of infantile/narcissistic rage, early moral development (shame, empathy, the superego), and finally the emergence of self-regulation — the internalization of the caregiver's regulatory function and the setting of an autonomic "set point."
The clinical section reads pathology as a developmental history of failed affect regulation. Secure attachment reflects a caregiver who keeps arousal within an optimal band and repairs misattunements; insecure-avoidant and insecure-resistant patterns reflect chronic misattunement and impaired orbitofrontal maturation. Psychopathology is operationally defined as a limitation of adaptive stress-regulating capacity, with recovery/reparative deficits as functional markers; Schore sketches the neurochemistry of depressive and manic dysregulation, and the developmental psychopathology of borderline and narcissistic personality disorders, plus psychosomatic vulnerability via disrupted psychosocial-neuroendocrine-immune communication. The psychotherapy chapter proposes that treatment recapitulates early dyadic regulation: right-hemisphere-to-right-hemisphere, largely nonverbal affective communication in the transference-countertransference relationship transforms maladaptive internal working models into more securely regulated ones.
The final part widens the lens. Right-hemispheric single-word speech and inner "dialogue" are tied to self-regulation and the appearance of a "bad self" under shame. The "dialogical self" emerges from internalized affective dialogue with the caregiver; consciousness, empathy, theory of mind and continuity-of-self are grounded in the dual-circuit orbitofrontal system's capacity to switch between psychobiological states. Chapter 36 points toward deeper biological substrates — brain mitochondria, organismic bioenergetics, mitochondrial-nuclear genome interactions, and stress proteins — as future frontiers.
