This is a general-public self-help book, one step further from the research than The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy (2018, same author, already summarised here). Its reader is the person, not the clinician: exercises, second-person address, "you might" throughout.

The inheritance chain is now three links long: research → Porges's theory (which its author calls a framework for organizing information and structuring hypotheses) → Dana's clinical manual → this trade book. ⛔ Nothing gains evidential weight along that chain, and the first link already declines to claim it.

What it states

Verified quotations

"The "vagal" in Polyvagal Theory refers to the vagus nerve" (probed, 1 occurrence)

Definitional, correct, and the book's useful register: it explains vocabulary.

Verified quotations

"Remember, the common experience of moving in and out of states is not a barrier to well-being."
(probed, 1 occurrence)

⚠️ A reassurance, not a finding. Reportable as what the book tells its reader; ungradeable.

Verified quotations

"If I only tried harder, worked harder, and paid more attention, I might not be so incompetent"
(probed, 1 occurrence)

The book's rendering of a self-critical inner voice mapped onto an autonomic state. ⛔ The mapping state → story is the method's working assumption, stated as such in the 2018 book; here it is presented to a lay reader without that framing.

Good for / must not be used for

Good for: vocabulary made accessible; the phrasing a client is likely to have met; the author's reassurances, reported as reassurances.
