General summary

Foundations in Social Neuroscience (MIT Press, 2002) is a large edited anthology that gathers 83 reprinted papers — mostly primary research articles, plus a handful of reviews — to found and delimit the field of social neuroscience. It is not a monograph with a single argument: it is a cartography assembled by a broad editorial board (Cacioppo, Berntson, Adolphs, Carter, Davidson, McClintock, McEwen, Meaney, Schacter, Sternberg, Suomi, Taylor), each of whom lends a slice of the discipline. The organizing thesis, stated in the general introduction, is that the mind and behaviour are best understood through the joint contribution of neuroscientists, cognitive scientists, and social scientists — a multilevel integrative stance that refuses to study the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems as if they operated outside sociocultural influence.

Part II — Multilevel integrative analyses of social behavior

This part supplies the methodological rationale for the field. Its lead chapter (Crabbe, Wahlsten & Dudek) reports the now-classic multi-laboratory experiment showing that the behavioural effects of mouse gene knockouts vary substantially across testing environments — a demonstration that phenotype cannot be read off genotype independent of context, and hence a template for the multilevel, gene-by-environment reasoning the volume advocates. The part continues with the Cacioppo et al. programme for multilevel integrative analysis of human behaviour, Dunbar's social-brain hypothesis, and frameworks for bridging social-personality psychology, neuropsychology, and health science.

What this map does NOT cover

An anthology, not a synthesis. These 83 chapters are reprinted papers by different author teams, most of them primary research articles with their own methods, samples, and results. The volume juxtaposes them under editorial headings; it does not reconcile them, and nothing here licenses treating "Foundations" as a single unified voice or argument.

A 2002 state of the art. The anthology captures social neuroscience at its founding moment. Its empirical claims — in neuroimaging, in social priming, in small-sample or single-study findings — predate a decade of methodological tightening and the reproducibility scrutiny that followed; several individual results have been revisited since. The book does not anticipate that.
